In addition to considering the different types of Natural Stone, you should also explore the three different finishes. “Polished” is exactly that – glossy, reflects light and showcases the color of the stone. “Honed” finishes are satin smooth and reflect very little light. This finish is optimum for floor applications. The third finish, “flamed”, has a rough texture, such as on granite floor tiles. As you can see, there is a finish for every application and style preference!

MAINTENANCE

Natural Stone should be sealed periodically in order to achieve maximum protection. Everyday cleaning requires simple, basic steps. If you have a spill, it should be removed as quickly as possible. Since these surfaces are porous, they soak up liquids relatively quickly. All surfaces should be cleaned with a stone cleaner and a soft cloth. Scouring powders or creams are too abrasive and should be avoided. Mild acidic solutions can be used on siliceous stones such as granite, slate or sandstone. Marble, travertine and limestone are extremely sensitive to acidic solutions, so vinegar and lemon juice should always be avoided. Due to their abrasive nature, sand, dirt and grit are the enemy of Natural Stone floors. Simply use a dry dust mop to remove these particles.
